The works by Lucia Veselá, a native of Trnava, thematically map a level of human relations. Her paintings, photographs, objects or videos are resonated by a question of proximity and distance in communication and the limits connected with this. At the same time, she works with the elements of ordinary naturalness which we are very familiar with. Intimate home background which is often naturally a scene of our personal relations is mirrored in her works in a form of common household items such as a duster or blender.

Within the solo exhibition in the Synagogue – Centre of Contemporary Art, the female author is presenting her latest works developing this theme in a broad range of media. The groundfloor of the Synagogue is bearing the stamp of boundaries as barriers that appear in her paintings and object. The abstract series of large-scale canvases uses an atmosphere of uncertainty. Unclear landscape horizons shrouded in fog can be read as a synonym of an unclear, confused situation in the field of relation communication. Similarly, Veselá also makes matter-of-fact pictures unclear for spectators either by a more relaxed style of painting or by an ambiguity of her view of the articles of everyday use.
Natural materials and fine grasses that Veselá composes in her objects and paintings refer to natural fragility in relations but also in the mentioned barriers which despite their strength can stand paradoxically on a very fragile foundation. An important part of her works is an element of topicality and a moment of gradual imbalance coming before the turning point. That is to say the turn in overcoming barriers often happens on the basis of unnoticeable time changes.

On the first floor the objects and video are greatly resonated by the theme of a boundary as a threshold that is necessary to be overcome. A question of stepping forward to the other one at a price of risking a loss of one´s own comfort is again presented through a gentleness of the grass which is crumbled when touched and a real wooden threshold having been prepared for the spectator to step over.

Fragility and proximity are studied by Lucia Veselá also in the field of photography where she searches for the relations in both natural and matter-at-hand level. Within the concern for topicality she works developing her own analog photographic record. With fading or darkening photographs she works to the highest degree as a painter. The exposing of photographs she approaches as an important process of a fragile turning point which to a certain degree can influence a resulting picture.

The exhibition “Adventurous situation“ thematizes a question of overcoming limits not only between two beings, but also at a level of stepping out of one´s own comfort zone in the context of efforts at understanding at a personal and also a broader social level. Veselá challenges the spectator to be active – she wants them to make efforts, to step over a fictitious threshold, and to come in to an “unknown territory“ of another person.

Lucia Veselá (*1985) is a graduate from the Studio of Painting of Assoc. Prof. Mgr. art. Klaudia Kosziby, ArtD., at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (VŠVU) in Bratislava. In her works she deals with painting and its exceeding photography, object, and video. She comes from Trnava, lives and works in Bratislava.
