Total Romantic is a curated exhibition presenting am all-women ensemble of Slovak and Czech artists, who are also (but not exclusively) painters. The exhibition topic alludes to the historical Romanticism in painting and the movement’s ‘father’. The exhibition showcases the works of young, contemporary artists, who have something in common with the painters of Romanticism. The immortal ideas of this artistic movement have been ever so fascinating and some, like personal experience of the author are still dominating the artistic world even today, although they have been somewhat adapted and tweaked to reflect the here and now.

One of the aspects inherent in being a painter is a certain loneliness when working in an atelier, stemming from the fact that the process of creation proper is a highly individual pursuit. Therefore, the idea of the artist being a solitary creative individual is one of the typical angles of interpretation of to the artist’s work.

Total Romantic offers a collection of works produced by well-known Slovak and Czech female artists who have in common their effort to present highly individual visual elements in their paintings, subjective visions, ideals and concepts. Each of them has approached the topic in her own way, leaving their individual, very personal imprints. This offers perceptive viewers an insight into each artist’s intimate world, grabbing the visitor’s attention, communicating an intense and authentic message against a backdrop of today’s hollow social atmosphere.

The exhibition captures the original approaches the painters have used to articulate their very own visual identity. It manifests their belief that their work is (possibly) the only right way to go, and their day-to-day struggle with being creative and search for an authentic outcome. It is a search for the ideal, going back to the historical context of painting or another historical era gone by and its value system, when people lived in harmony (with nature, for instance). The paintings express the artists’ effort to capture a moment or a mental and spiritual immersion into an individual’s existence, in particular the painters’. Subjective thinking and the encoding of the topic using the language of painting are still worth looking into, interpreting and appreciating. The works will suck you into a distinctive world that never ceases to amaze.

If we tried to sum up the visual aspects of the individual works, we would probably fail, as they don’t share much, Yet, we could certainly say they all are captivating, fascinating, expressive, original. They are figure paintings yet they also fluctuate between reality and stylisation partly working with abstraction.
