Marcin Berdyszak: Shadow of time

The site-specific installation of the famous Polish sculptor is an intervention into space, using the symbolism of artefacts and the message of signs.

The public had an opportunity to get acquainted with works of Marcin Berdyszak, a Polish sculptor, during Free Style exhibition in 2016, which he held together with Patrik Kovačovský in the premises of Koppel Villa.

The project titled Shadow of Time is his individual intervention into the space in the Synagogue - Centre of Contemporary Art. The author formally follows up his previous installations including multiplied or accumulated elements. Completing the installation with a process element with a nature that directly refers to the past of the space, he creates a dialogue - not only between the work and the space, but across time, as well. The installation is not just a reaction to the past events that occur in the work under the influence of the process changes as a metaphor of stigmatisation or ostracism; it is also a memento that the shadows of the past keep following us: they may show through today's banality and penetrate our present.

The author divided the exhibition into three independent blocks: the ground floor is characterised by the above-mentioned site-specific installation reflecting not only the symbolism of the space, its characteristic features and details, but, for instance, also the evanescent understanding of the aesthetics of fine art; the first floor uses a documentary record to refer to the history of the space. In the premises of little towers that became accessible in November, the author will exhibit one of his figural compositions that a Polish art historian, Elźbieta Kościelak, defined as an "active cultural text with a structure open for interactions".
