Duration of the exhibition: April 5, 2018 (Thu) – May 9, 2018 (Wed)

Lenka Vilhelmová, a leading Czech graphic designer, painter and a university teacher, who has participated in the recent Mirror of Silence international exhibition, is presenting her own author project. The exhibition called “The Head Palpable” offers an overview of her works from 1998 until the present. Emphasis is placed on the period of the past five years, but brand-new works of 2018 are presented as well.

The exhibition concept is divided into five parts sharing a common central theme - a human head presented as a timeless and universal visual object, at the same time being a symbol of the subjective reflection of a state of mind, memory, feelings and intuition. A head is a box, a place of origin of imaginative processes, which the image of reality is made of. For the author herself, it means “a dwelling place of personal subjectivity; it is a chamber of being (Dasein), a pantry, bedroom, bed, grave, also a prison, quarantine, solitary, reading room, studio, prayer room, gates, wickets, secret corridors, breakthroughs, ruined walls, Zwingers, sounds, gardens of paradise, but also a flowing house, flowing head, flowing heart, energy penetration...”. Her approach to the topic is original, associative, soft, but also brutal. She depicts the theme of head as an abstract sign (e.g. Head cycle and The Head Palpable), lettristically (e.g. The Letter to an Innocent) or metaphorically - in a form of a bottom, a house, a container or a target (e.g. cycle called Targets). She is interested in the external shape, inside view, as well as the surface - specific faces whose expressions reflect experiences over the course of time (e.g. a time-lapse project called The House Is Not Alone).

The exhibition is a summary of the works Lenka Vilhelmová has created until now; it will remind of her typical versatility based on the combination of traditional approaches and new technologies, various forms and diverse materials, including those marked by corrosion. She offers different types of implementations - graphic letters, pictures, author's books, objects and installations. Its concept is retrospective, while the spectator's journey begins in the present. The first hall is dominated by a large-format experimental printing on plexiglass called Wander, reflecting the feeling of global uncertainty, and a monumental installation called The Archaeology of Memory, asking the questions of our most fundamental roots, ancestors, human instincts, threats, and thoughts taken after the past cultures. While passing the rooms, a spectator will proceed to the past and will have a chance to get to know older layers of the work.
