Jan Koniarek Gallery would like to invite you to the opening of a solo exhibition of a young painter, Žofia Dubová, called Aspect/Prospect. The opening will take place on Thursday, July 13, at 6 PM in the premises of Synagogue - Centre of Contemporary Art. The curator of this exhibition is Barbora Komarová.

Žofia Dubová will introduce a number of large-format images from the series called Hra:na (Ed:ge) (2016). At first glance, they depict private and sensitive sections of landscape, such as mountains, forest paths or a sunset. However, the author especially focuses on the edge of paintings (that are normally of the littlest interest), working with it as with an unexplored area offering her unlimited opportunities and much greater freedom, as its internal settings are different from a traditional "centre" of a work. After having painted the "main" part, Dubová unfolds the edges and puts finishing touches to the canvas, drawing our attention to the edges that we would not have noticed otherwise. By means of some more modifications, she reveals to us new, maybe even surprising, unknown areas. Upon a closer examination of the paintings, we can from time to time notice short texts, a couple of sentences by the author that may complement or complete our perception of the paintings.

The name of the exhibition is derived from a known theory of observation of objects and works of art. The theory was created by a French 17th-century painter, Nicolas Poussin. This theory assumes two fundamental types of perception - on one hand, a simple perception, natural for a human eye, of external shapes and forms that he calls "aspect", and on the other hand, a contemplative and reflexive observation, an act of reason, a so-called "prospect". When observing a work of art, the later type enables us to take a certain distance, or see the details of the work, resulting in better understanding or a critical review.

Žofia Dubová (*1991, Bratislava) completed her study of painting in Daniel Fischer's studio at Academy of Fine Arts and Design Bratislava in 2016. At that time, she also completed an internship at a glass studio and foreign study stays (USA, Portugal). She has presented her works at several group and solo exhibitions, not only in Slovakia, but also in the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Russia and USA. In 2016, she was awarded a prize of the Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design and the Slovak Union of Visual Arts Prize.
