Patrik Kovačovský  Marcin Berdyszak  Free Style

The exhibition title draws attention to two areas: the first points at the rich and wide-ranging production of both authors, of which a thematic sample for GJK in Trnava was selected upon mutual agreement. Another area concerns visual art communication: both artists have been exhibiting together for a couple of years, while adjusting their projects both to a place of presentation as well as current political and social events in Europe. Their joint exhibitions have included such projects as Alfa Beta (2014) in Bratislava City Gallery or the latest project Real - Fiction (2016) in Up Gallery in Berlin.

For Jan Koniarek Gallery they created an exhibition consisting of older and newer works; that is a brief "historical" overview. Marcin Berdyszak (*1964, Poznań, PL) is exhibiting his works in Trnava for the first time, even though in the past six years, he presented them several times in Bratislava and Tatra Gallery Poprad. Patrik Kovačovský (*1970, Bratislava) exhibited in the synagogue in Trnava in 1998, when he made a monumental video installation called Blimp in the synagogue interior. Since then his works have been presented in the premises of GJK three more times: in 2001 within a great joint exhibition called NEvesta, following the concept of Eva Masaryková, Martin Piaček, Aneta Mona Chise and Vlado Beskid (Synagogue - Centre of Contemporary Art), and then in 2002 and 2003 in Koppel Villa within the joint exhibitions of the then director, Viera Jančeková, as part of the projects called LightHouse and Neo-Constructivism in the Slovak Visual Arts.

"The art of Marcin Berdyszak is an impression (anticipation) of the evolution in artistic practice linking the current state of the art of the Western world with the art perceived as the part of human nature. His installations and objects are active texts of culture. The structure of the text is open to interaction. Berdyszak is an inheritor of the avant-garde. In his artistic discourse, he does not comment on the achievements of the 20th-century avant-garde, but he reveals their helplessness in relation to the world of today," wrote Elźbieta Kościelak, a Polish art historian, in her extensive text.
Twenty-two years of Patrik Kovačovský's activities on the visual art scene have been predominantly characterised by his dialogue with memory from the perspective of history - referring to specific events in the form of sequences of historical films; from the perspective of art and science - referring to constructivism, dadaism, but also pop-art; from the visual perspective – referring to the political symbols of the past and present (e.g. monetary system) and eventually from the perspective of nostalgia and romanticism - referring to ecology and subjective memory.

The exhibition Free Style combines the opinions and artistic outputs of both sculptors into a unit, in which their solitary approach to the presentation of the issue can resonate.
