The academic painter Marián Oravec was born on November 11, 1958 in Bratislava. During 1974 -1978 he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Bratislava. Afterwards he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 1978 – 1984; the department of book illustration and free graphics under the tutelage of Albín Brunovský. In the early period of his artworks, he drew comics and illustrated over 20 children books, for which he was awarded "Children's Joy", the prize of the publishing house Mladé letá. His preferred techniques include: painting, drawing, illustration and graphics. Oravec’s distinctive style manifests great patience and sense for detail. The works on a picture usually take several months and result in a surrealistic board painting with an inner story, reminding of the paintings of Dutch authors. Marián Oravec lives and works in Bratislava. He has worked abroad for few years, mainly in Australia. He has exhibited in Bratislava, Split, Melbourne, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Ferarra, and has taken part in many international displays such as Ex-libris Biennale in Krakow, Saint Niklaas in Belgium and Kunst RAI in Amsterdam. His graphics and paintings are prevailed by mythological motives and scenes. Most of his works are part of private collections.

Considering the fact that the pictures are often booked prior to completion and are in private collections of his admirers, spectators in Trnava are probably presented the greatest collection of his graphics, illustrations and drawings. Such complex collection has never been presented before for it also includes the artist's latest works. His almost complete works of free graphics form a separate collection in the exhibition. It also includes the works of Ex-libris, an almost forgotten form of small graphics. The message of school of Brunovský is apparent in the works of Marián Oravec. Apart from the admiration of his professor, the author himself admits the influence of Salvator Dali and the Czech artist Zdeněk Burian, whom he knew in person. The collectors of his works especially admire his precision of expression and an appropriate combination of techniques, such as etching and mezzotint or aquatint in his engravings. The author is skilful in drawing, which is proven by the collection of original illustrations and drawings. Unlike this year's exhibitions in the synagogue, which were mainly space-art installations, the works of Marián Oravec are an example of honest graphic art that is disappearing from galleries in these days. In this pre-Christmas and New Years’ time, the exhibition compiled by Stanislav Háber is refreshing for the audience of Trnava.
