On the occasion of the Cyril and Methodius jubilee year 2013 when we commemorate the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of the Thessalonian brothers on the territory of Great Moravia, the Ján Koniarek Gallery in Trnava prepared an exhibition aimed to reflect Cyril and Methodius themes in the works of Slovak artists.
The exhibition, conceived as a selection of works by Slovak authors from 19th century up to the present, aims to highlight two aspects of artistic interpretation of this historical - religious theme in Slovak fine arts: the first and the most common aspect consists in the works referring to the well established iconographic schemes and artistic tradition of the past that are, in this exhibition, represented by the work of Jozef Božetech Klemens SS.Cyril and Methodius dating back to 1867. The second, less numerous plane, consists in works offering a new grasp of the topic by means of current visual language. There are works by artists who are program-dedicated to the Great Moravian theme – e.g. Edita Ambrušová, Mikuláš Klimčák, Ľudmila Cvengrošová, Marian Polonský, Andrej Rudavský, but also works by artists who interpreted Cyril and Methodius topic in their work only occasionally, e.g. Tibor Bártfay, František Kudláč, Alexander Trizuljak, Ernest Zmeták. The most impressive works will certainly include the recently discovered oil painting by Jeremiah Bassi of 1910, but also works by “classics of Slovak painting” – Martin Benka, Jozef Hanula or Ľudovít Fulla. Most recent tendencies in artistic reflection of Cyril and Methodius theme are represented by works of Jozef Vydrnák and Darina Gladišová in painting; in sculpting they are models for the sculptural group of Saints Cyril, Methodius and Gorazd for Bratislava´s Hurbanovo Square (the winning project has not yet been implemented), first introduced in the context of gallery exhibition.
The exhibition includes a presentation of sights featuring Cyril and Methodius motif in the territory of the Trnava Self-governing Region through photographs, i.e. churches with patrocinium of SS. Cyril and Methodius, sculptures in public space, stained glass and the like. The exhibition is enriched by historical and archeological excursion prepared by GJK in cooperation with the Museum of History of the Slovak National Museum: by means of 14 panels visitors can acquaint themselves with the mission of the Thessalonian brothers, their work and the bequest of Cyril and Methodius cult for today.

Exhibition accompanying events: documentary films from RTVS film archive about Cyril and Methodius mission; an animated film for children.
On 5 July 2013 the exhibition will be open to the public free of charge.
