Petr Malina (born in 1976 in Prague) studied in 1994 - 2001 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the studio of prof. Jiří Sopko and in the Visual Communication Studio of Jiří David. He attended an internship at the Staatsliche Akademie der bildende Künste in Karlsruhe (1998, prof. van Dülmen) and at the Middlesex University in London (2000).
He exclusively pursues painting, characterized by areas of color balance and readability of the scene content. Thematically and expression concentrated creation partly refers to author´s painter examples from the world of art scene: Edward Hopper (1882 – 1967), Alex Katz (1927).
The Two Worlds exhibition is Malina´s second solo exhibition in Slovakia. It is indirectly linked to the City Times exhibition in the Bratislava City Gallery in April this year. Selection of large-format and cabinet paintings from the years 2003 – 2013 is based on the confrontation that can be read from several perspectives: two worlds, two different series of paintings in terms of theme and content, selection of which shall be presented in the Ján Koniarek Gallery, two worlds providing permanent inspiration for the author within his assumptions. They are gallery “worlds” (interior, exterior) and open landscape and urban agglomeration scenes. These are linked to places and cities that the author visited and built a relationship to them. Then he further develops it through painting. Among them, London has its dominant, unquestionable position.
Petr Malina is a careful observer of surrounding events. His approach is strictly voyeuristic. He is secretly photographing future themes for his paintings (mostly from behind or in profile); rarely are his “victims” conscious participants in this process. In this way he achieves certain authenticity - eliminating the process of posing and self-stylization. The concept of his work then continues: in selection of themes photographed, in stylising the depicted object, in suppressing or highlighting preferred details.
As for the extent and wide variety of themes this is, so far, the author´s most comprehensive presentation of work in one exhibition.
