Ondrej Zimka was born on 29 November 1937 in Turzovka, Hlinené. From 1958 to 1964 he studied in Bratislava at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Painting and Applied Graphics (prof. P.Matejka, J.Chovan). After graduation he devoted himself to chamber painting, illustrations, animated film, graphic design and cartoon humor. Though he stayed and worked in the city where he had studied, his birthplace, Kysuce, remained deeply rooted in his mind and became his inspiration and source of his further art creations. Ondrej Zimka is attributed the authorship of more than one hundred illustrated books as well as 11 animated films. His unique and versatile talent and many years of art work are evidenced by multiple significant national and international awards and participation in countless exhibitions at home and abroad, and by the presence of his works in a number of prominent public and private art collections. In 1982 he was awarded the Ľudovít Fulla award and in 1998 he got the state award – the Ľudovít Štúr Order Class II. Artist Andrew Zimka is also the Fine Arts Fund Prize winner for 2011 which he was awarded for an exceptionally extensive and creative contribution to several areas of Slovak art of the second half of the 20th century. Although Ondrej Zimka lives and creates in Bratislava, he frequently returns to his birthplace – an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him.
In terms of classification and decryption of the creative approach, Ondrej Zimka´s work is the closest to the wider mainstream of imaginative creation. The author´s approach consists in poetic, lyrical-expressive position with a simultaneously overlapping approach of “Zimka´s erudition”, spontaneity, fantasy, ambiguity and imagination. Technique of painting on wood, so peculiar, typical and distinctive, he gradually expanded and enriched with painted wooden compositions and objects of various sizes. His recent paintings and painted objects enchant with their visually attractive and absolutely brilliant color range used in bright coloring, changing to undertones, thus evoking imaginative landscapes and unearthly stories and destinies of people in author´s prospective shortcuts, intersecting in theatrical poses through layering of spatial plans. Life and fantasy, reality and vision – these are the key attributes of Zimka´s paintings. Ondrej Zimka, with his own distinctive approach, creates and combines seemingly uncombinable elements. In his paintings and objects, his clear handwriting combines elements of the past – folksiness, with lofty signs of presence and intriguing future, seasoned with author´s brainy sense of humor, which is proved by the latest exhibition.
